I’m sorry, Mom. Reddick to the A’s… but at least we have a pitcher!
In further proof that Ben Cherington reads my blog, a pitcher has been acquired!!! Andrew Bailey, ladies and gents, someone I’ve actually had my eye on. And that rarely ever happens!
And we like this guy, FYI:
Bailey’s repertoire consists of three main pitches: a four seam fastball, a curveball, and a cutter. Bailey has a very good fastball that he can locate well, coming in at 93–97 mph. Bailey’s cutter is also effective at 89–92 mph, and he can often get strikeouts with his fastball or cutter. Bailey’s curveball comes in at 78–80 mph, but Bailey usually throws his curveball earlier in the count to get ahead.
Yeah. I wiki-ed. So what?
We got this guy Ryan Sweeney too. His nickname is Firebird because he collects Pontiacs? Really? You collect Pontiacs? I collect… um… unicorns…

Not only is Josh Reddick my mother’s pick for a son-in-law, he’s kind of been badass. The last time I was this skeptical about letting the rookie go... well…
But this is a year for optimism. OPTIMISM. So. As bittersweet as it is to say bye to Reddick (and I think I will cry about this later over bath salts), I’m over the moon at actually getting someone who can throw.
I STILL think we need some Hiroki Kuroda. Is it wrong that I will genuinely NOT be satisfied until EVERY. SINGLE. PITCHER. has a backup? If that’s wrong, baby, I don’t want to be right.
Sigh.
I have a date. True story. I’m only dating UNC Chapel Hill fans this week.
Does that make me bitter?

Don’t need Reddick. Do need a closer. Sounds perfect to me.
You’ll like Bailey. Dude’s a stud when he’s on the mound, his biggest drawback is sometimes he’s not always healthy. One stat I’m sure you’ll like is he has only blown one save in the second half of the season in his entire three year career.
If he is always injured which is what I keep hearing then this is a mistake.
There is a big difference pitching against our division than the one he just came from.
This is a gamble by the Sox. Closing in Oakland is nothing like closing in Beantown. Both Boston and the Yankees are definitely watching their pennies this offseason.
But I do like the fact that Bailey was born on May 31 because the only other Red Sox players I could have featured at my Beantown Baseball Birthday blog for that date were Dave Roberts and Tim Van Egmond. Sweeney, on the other hand, shares his Feb 20th birthday with one of the coolest named Red Sox in history in my opinion. I mean it doesn’t get any better than Derek Lilliquist, does it?
