Pedro retires: Nail in the coffin of hope- and other stories to sparkle your Sunday

Yeah. So. It’s not like a surprise.

Yeah.

I mean… Pedro… you did tease us last year with that whole, you could come back to the Red Sox convo… Remember that? I mean, it’s not like I held my breath or anything.  Or blogged about it. It’s not like it ignited this deep dark desperate hope or anything. WHATEVER, PEDRO.

Pedro Martinez is retiring, Soxies. Our world crumbles.

And I have to find out on the INTERNET. You’d think that, after years of passion- all those sexy nights in 1999- you’d THINK I’d get a phone call or something.

But. Whatever.

Fine.

Go.

LEAVE US.

(Come back!)

Speaking of people who should… um… kind of retire…

Tim Wakefield wants another shot.

“I have a strong desire to pitch one more year for the Red Sox,’’ Wakefield said.

See, Tim Wakefield’s like your father. You’re playing Mario Kart with David and you’ve just set the perfect, kickass banana trap, but your dad comes in and asks to play. YOU LET HIM. No matter how many super cool awesome banana traps you’ve set, see, because he is your FATHER.

If Tim Wakefield asks to play for ONE. MORE. YEAR. You let him. Oh, you let him.

Cherington weighed in with a hearty “maybe.”

Oh, and so did someone of less relevance:

“If he’s used in the right way, he can be very effective,’’ said former teammate Johnny Damon. “But when you don’t know what you’re doing – if you’re in the bullpen, if you’re starting – it makes it tough. It would be tough on me if I didn’t know whether I was starting or coming off the bench.”

WHY ARE YOU STILL TALKING????

“We all know in Boston that guys aren’t going to be there forever. Before their careers are over, it’s not going to be in Boston, unfortunately. No one ever leaves Boston happy. But hopefully Tim Wakefield can.’’

SHUT UP, JOHNNY DAMON.

Oh look. Now he’s talking about Papi.

“Shoot, I was trying to tell him if he went to New York his 30 home runs turns into 40,’’ Damon said. “He still has a great chance to win. I’m happy I got to experience both sides [of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry]. Both sides were very incredible for me.”

Johnny Damon, I swear to-

“I know there may be some opportunities and less drama elsewhere.

SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP

And Robinson Cano joins the convo.

“It would be a good idea, having another lefty on the team,” Cano said. “We all know he’s a great hitter. Last year, a lot of people were saying, ‘He’s done.’ He proved a lot of people wrong. I like people, when they’re down, they prove people wrong. He came back, did a great job.”

Robinson Cano, I WILL fight you.

——-

Yu Darvish should be on the market after winter meetings, sources say. Despite our poor, poor, poor, poor (POOR) recent experience with a certain Daisuke, I’m going to say we should go all in. And here’s why: Yeah, so he’s a badass. Yeah, so we have a manager with Japanese experience. Yeah, so he’s got the numbers. But why do I want him in Boston? BECAUSE I WANT SOMETHING TO FRICKING HAPPEN, DAMNIT!

Can we just do SOMETHING?

I’m having to live vicariously through the MARLINS. THE MARLINS, AMERICA!

Fix it, Bobby V. Fix it.

Oh look… Hiroki Kuroda is in sight… And C.J. Wilson. And Roy Oswalt. Thoughts, Soxies? I JUST WANT TO BUY SOMEONE.

Tito and Bobby V may completely switch places. The internet says he’s looking hard at a television 2012 career.

And that’s your Sunday update! Hope your weekend is as swell as mine…

Ugh. You can keep Ortiz. He makes no sense for the Yankees. They need a spot for Jesus Montero and DH is about it. I suppose he could platoon at first with Tex, who hasn’t hit for s**t as a lefty the last couple years, but that would be a whole lotta coin for two part timers.

You are full of it. If he was on your team you would change your tune in a heart beat.

Not really. The last ex-Red Sox I really liked in pinstripes were Sparky Lyle and Luis Tiant.

Wake needs to retire. It was a good run as a knuckleballer, but it just isn’t effective anymore… Didn’t he give up like six runs in his 200th win?

“Injury to John Lackey that will require him to miss the entire 2012 season…” I love how they say that like it’s a bad thing. OH NO! Whatever will we do without Lackey? What will become of us? How will we manage??!!!!!!!!

If they keep ‘Tek to mentor Salty and Lavarnway, I’m not sure Papi will stay. If ‘Tek goes, Papi will probably stay. Oswalt would be sweet: low-cost (sort of), high return (maybe). Buerhle would eat innings like they were fried-chicken in the ninth. Darvish makes too much sense, regarding Bobby V’s ability to ‘humanise’ Japanese players (What the eff is that anyway? Humanise.

And they should sign Pedro to a one day deal, so he can retire where he should.

  5. December 4, 2011 at 9:14 pm

Why retire when there are teams dumb enough to sign them to three or four year deals.

Say what you want about old man Wakefield but he was big for us last year with all the injuries. I see NO reason we can’t bring him back in the same role.

The media played it that the Red Sox used Wake far more than they wanted too and that he sucked during that time but that is a complete lie. FACT is Wakefield left the game 3 times winning and he also left with the game tied a few times and all these leads were lost by our lovely bullpen.

You also need to stop quoting Johnny Damon. I always skip over his name and since reading these quotes I want to go stab him with a red sox pitch fork. Why do they keep asking him his opinion?

    • December 5, 2011 at 10:46 am

Wake pretty much pitched to what is ERA indicated, but some of those were good games. You are right about the bullpen losing leads for him, I couldn’t understand why the media kept harping on how long it took HIM to win that big one, when the bullpen kept giving wins away. However it did often appear that his knuckleball would be working well, then all of a sudden there would be a couple baserunners, then a 3 run homer, then some more baserunners and POOF! the lead was gone. His knuckler would go from moving and missing bats for innings at a time, then one inning it doesn’t move until it lands in the Charles. I would like them to find out why this was happening and get it fixed. If we bring him back. And if we ever have a pitching coach.

I think with Damon it’s not a matter of why anyone ask’s his opinion, but why does anyone stop to listen to what he has to say, especially about other teams and situations that he hasn’t been a part of in years. Because I’m sure he is always yapping about other peoples business, probably even when he’s alone.

The Boston media likes to listen to Damon because they secretly hate our teams. They love to make the fans and the teams miserable unless your a Celtic, then you get a free pass for life unless your name is Antoine Walker. Then even when you play on a broken knee they give you no credit and cusofy you for doing what your coach told you to do. Do you have 8 hours. I can totally rant on the free pass the Celtics get from the media for hours and hours and hours and…..:)

As for Wakefield I am not saying he is perfect. I agree with you he has some sucky innings last year but he did a lot for this team that I don’t think he gets credit for. Give him a few million and use him as long relief or a starter if needed. I think he deserves that and I am not a Wake fan.

Damon sounds like a Curt Schilling in the making. There isn’t a thing he won’t dish on and he requires no one to ask him anything. Won’t stop chatting…ever.

Maybe I was a little hard on you. I would never like a Yankee.lol Aceves is the only one but then again we always get your crap never your good players.

I would bet you anything though that you will change your mind on Papi eventually. He is the one person that would win you over.

    • December 5, 2011 at 6:37 pm

      Aceves is NOT crap!
